Acting Opportunities

Here are a few suggestions to help you maximize your acting opportunities.

Get An Agent

An agent can get you acting opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable. He should get you seen. The more you're seen, the better your likelihood of getting work. Nearly all film, TV, Broadway and Off Broadway productions exclusively use agent submissions.

The more experience and talent you have the more likely an agent will take you on. An agent makes money when you work, so if you can demonstrate your talent, you shouldn't have any trouble signing on. You shouldn't hesitate to send along a resume of your work and a headshot, but it’s essential that you send follow-up cards letting the agent know where and when you'll be performing, so they can see your talents for themselves.

Your Resume

A resume serves two purposes. It helps you get an agent, and then the agent will use it to help you get auditions. So you need one. And here's what you'll want to include in yours ...

Keep it to a single page, typed, and easy to read. It should contain your contact information, your acting education, your particular talens, and your acting experience. It should be honest. No exaggerating! Expecially with today's Internet. Everything can be quickly verified, and you don't want false information coming back to haunt you down the road.

It should also include a recent headshot. You can find additional information on headshots elesewhere on this website.

Commercials - Your Best Acting Opportunities?

The majority of acting opportunities are found around major cities such as New York and L.A. Locally, however, you'll find that the most lucrative acting jobs will be commercials for local car dealerships, restaurants and large stores. These are often produced by local agencies that normally use local talent because it’s easier and cheaper than flying in someone from L.A. As with all acting opportunities, you'll still need to have the look and the talent they're after, but commercials are an excellent way to create income while building your resume.

Experience Take advantage of every acting opportunity within traveling distance. Check with the school system, investigate local theatrical groups, community groups, even acting coaches for potential acting roles. Get on lists to be notified whenever there are auditions. And if you don't get a part, volunteer to help in other ways such as set design, backstage work, anything that will keep you working in the acting arena where you can continue to learn and grow.
