Acting Colleges

Acting colleges provide a well-rounded experience in which students can fully learn their craft. You'll often find programs that including acting, dance, design, directing, and writing, as well as both technical and artistic approaches. University training is often a richer, more affordable experience for the aspiring actor.

Most schools with an acting program have their own theater on campus, where students mount productions as part of their coursework. Graduates work professionally in theater, film, and television ... teach drama at the secondary or college level ... or write scripts for dramatic presentation.

Whether you're interested in a B.A, a B.F.A., or an M.F.A., you'll find acting programs provide you with a solid foundation of skills and experiences (such as voice training, stage combat, improv, directing, writing, theater, etc.) that would be difficult to match elsewhere, both in their extensiveness and value.

When choosing an acting college, you'll want to research those that provide the specialty education you feel will serve your needs best. Make sure that you'll receive a well-rounded education, with fundamental skills (both technical and artistic) to complement the specific studies you're after. And you'll want to apply to multiple programs, to help assure that you get to one of the acting colleges that most interests you.

Here are some resources to get your acting education started:

Chapman University
The College of Performing Arts brings together Chapman University’s Conservatory of Music and the School of the Arts, comprised of the Departments of Art, Dance and Theatre. This partnership strengthens each discipline, while positioning the College of Performing Arts as the cultural and aesthetic center of the university. Students will enjoy the school’s atmosphere, which combines scholarship, creativity, free expression and intellectual curiosity through both curricular offerings and a broad spectrum of cultural events. College of Performing Arts students also get the chance to perform at special events, such as Chapman’s American Celebration, a Broadway-style musical revue that serves as the university’s largest annual fundraiser. Under the leadership of Dean Dr. William Hall, Chapman has plans for a new performing arts complex on the Orange campus that will serve the needs of our students and the entire community.

University of Southern California
The School encourages students to gain professional experience and academic credit through internships and has created a partnership with Center Theatre Group (one of the country’s leading professional theatres) that offers internships ranging from performance opportunities to administrative experience. The School also attracts a wide range of guest speakers and lecturers, including some of the most distinguished talents from stage, screen and television. Our graduate programs in Acting and Dramatic Writing are both intensive, three year programs taught by a faculty comprised of theatre professionals working at the highest level of the industry.

Occidental College
Students explore the art of theater through theory, performance, and production. Our students develop a rich understanding of the enactment of the written word and of various forms of theatrical expression, with each student combining theoretical studies with intensive performance and production experiences.

UCLA
At UCLA the study of theater, film, television and digital media is integrated within a single professional school. We believe in nurturing the strengths of individual students by encouraging them to find their own voice, and by giving them the tools they need to make their voices heard.

The Tisch School of the Arts
Founded over 40 years ago, Tisch is one of the nation's leading centers for professional training, scholarship and research in the performing and media arts. The Tisch School of the Arts is committed to continuing our tradition of providing an extraordinary training ground for the individual artist. So whether your goal is to be an actor, dancer, photographer, filmmaker, film scholar, video artist, dramatic writer, or set/lighting designer, Tisch provides young artists and scholars with a humanistic education, rigorous preparation in their discipline, and invaluable opportunities to pursue their artistic development.

Purdue University Acting Program
The student will receive a solid foundation in all aspects of theatre as part of a well-rounded liberal arts education. Working as part of a team, the student learns to collaborate artistically toward the realization of a theatrical production. Each student may choose to focus in any given area. The Acting Program at Purdue University seeks to expand the young actor’s range of knowledge and expression through the performance of drama. The actor is a channel for the truth in the play and must possess the ability to comprehend the playwright’s message and communicate it as a character. The Acting Program consists of Acting Core Classes, Specialized Training, and Related Required Courses. Upon completion, the student may choose to enter any communication-related field or pursue further graduate study for a career in the theatre.

Brooklyn College MFA Acting Program
The MFA Acting program at Brooklyn College is intensive and demands a two-year full time residency committed to rigorous training in voice, movement, speech, acting, and theatrical analysis. Simultaneously, our students receive a myriad of performance opportunities in this professional environment that challenges them to apply the techniques and skills practiced in the studio. Guest directors and faculty direct four main-stage productions per year and the MFA directors direct five productions per year in the intimate New Workshop Theater. All the MFA and BFA actors work as a collaborative ensemble with the MFA directors, dramaturges, and designers. Professional workshops led by nationally and internationally acclaimed master teachers and guest artists support the training curriculum in this uniquely collaborative environment.
